Bow before the fucking king of musical theater. You can put stuff in my ask box, but I'm unlikely to answer on the blog. I will probably just put the answer in your ask box. If you really want to have a conversation, I'm always on Twitter.

Carol Lawrence,
Tonight at 8:30

Carol Lawrence, who originated the role of Maria in West Side Story, singing “You’ll Never Get Away From Me” from Gypsy from her album Tonight at 8:30.

Shani Wallis (whom you probably know as Nancy from the film version of Oliver!) as Madame Rose singing “You’ll Never Get Away From Me.”

Not sure who’s playing Herbie. Do you know?

As the album cover says:

Kay Medford (Momma Brice in ‘Funny Girl’) in Gypsy

Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff sing “You’ll Never Get Away From Me” from Gypsy, or, a terrifying preview of Broadway in the year 2045. (Singing starts around 0:30.)

Over the years I’ve heard that Tyne Daly’s Rose was far better than you’d guess from the cast album. I love the way she delivers the dialog in this clip like she’s in a screwball comedy from the ’30s.

Judy Kuhn,
Just In Time: The Songs of Jule Styne

Latin-themed covers of showtunes never fail to please me. This is Judy Kuhn with a fantastic take on “You’ll Never Get Away From Me” from her Jule Styne album, in a delightful nod to Peggy Lee’s classic Latin ala Lee.
