Fuck Yeah Stephen Sondheim

Bow before the fucking king of musical theater. You can put stuff in my ask box, but I'm unlikely to answer on the blog. I will probably just put the answer in your ask box. If you really want to have a conversation, I'm always on Twitter.

Jayne Houdyshell may not have won a Tony Award for her performance in Follies, but thanks to PS Classics, we’re all winners with this just-released solo version of her big number “Broadway Baby.”

In the show, the song is part of a trio montage, which finds the end of “Broadway Baby” subsumed in counterpoint with the other two songs; this version, which is you can also download (legally, for free), has the false ending you’re used to from concert and cabaret performances of the song.

And it’s great.

alaskan—thunderfuck:

The Tony Awards are tonight! I suggest you all look at this video of Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical nominee Josh Young! Seriously, he’s got an almost impossible vocal range.

Even if you’re not into theatre you should at least listen to the note at 00:45. It’ll blow you away!

Holy shaky camerawork, Batman!

…so if you want to know what I’m thinking, please follow me (@itsdlevy) on Twitter.

The proper plural form is “Tony Awards.”

E.g. When Audra wins her Tony tomorrow night, she will have five Tony Awards.

Not Tonys. Not Tonies. And certainly not Tony’s.

But WHERE THE FUCK is Bernadette’s Tony Award Nomination?

Like…Okay she’s getting her special award….but lol no. Where is her best actress nom.

I think too many people didn’t “get” what she was doing. It’s one of the pitfalls of playing someone who is, basically,…

Or maybe, just maybe, people “got” what she was doing and didn’t care for it (which is how I felt) or thought she did it fine but thought a number of other actresses did what they did just a little bit better.

We are all disappointed when performances we enjoyed don’t get recognized, but that doesn’t mean that everyone else is stupid.

I’m honestly more disapponted that Elaine Paige didn’t get a nomination…

I liked Jayne Houdyshell a lot, but she wouldn’t have been the supporting player I’d have picked out for a nomination either. (Personally, I would have gone with either Terri White or Rosalind Elias.)

At the 1989 Tony Awards, Angela Lansbury gives a brief lesson about the Eleven O’Clock Number, assisted by her friends Larry Kert and Betty Buckley.

Yes, this includes “Memory,” but if you sit through it, you’ll get to “Send in the Clowns” and “Being Alive.”
