From Stritch’s 2011 Carlyle show…
“Comedy Tonight/Love Is in the Air,” from the original London cast recording of Side by Side by Sondheim.
The opening number and one of my favorites. I do not own the copyright to this or claim any rights to this under IP law, but offer it as an introduction to one of my favorite Sondheim revues. Buy the album; you won’t regret it.
Remember that article from December announcing that The Dramatists Guild had uncovered a bunch of old reel to reel tapes of their members giving lectures about their work? Well, they’ve launched a podcast from those archives, and the first episode features a Stephen Sondheim talk from the early 1970s — he claims it’s his first — in which he sings a couple of songs that had been cut from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
It’s utterly delightful. I’m sure you’ll think so too.
Ugh. I wish I could listen to this. FU computer speakers! I wish this was downloadable so I could put it on my ipod :/
You can download it from the Dramatists Guild website - right-click on Sondheim’s face and save the target file.

Jackie & Roy: “Love Is In The Air”
from their album Sondheim
Jackie & Roy must be experienced rather than described.
When it was announced that The Birdcage would feature songs by Sondheim, we were so excited… When the final cut only included the rehearsal sequence of “Little Dream,” one line of “Foxtrot,” and this, it was a bit disappointing… Still, Robin Williams & Christine Baranski are charming together. If you want to skip to the singing, it starts at 1:46.
