Fuck Yeah Stephen Sondheim

Bow before the fucking king of musical theater.

You can put stuff in my ask box, but I'm unlikely to answer on the blog. I will probably just put the answer in your ask box. If you really want to have a conversation, I'm always on Twitter.

Richard Rodney Bennett,
A Different Side Of Sondheim

"I Do Like You," cut from Forum, from the very first jazz album devoted to Sondheim’s music, Richard Rodney Bennett’s A Different Side of Sondheim (1979).

Jackie Hoffman is tweeting from inside the audition room for (presumably) the Broadway revival of Forum.

James Corden, who won critical acclaim and a Tony Award for his comic performance in Broadway’s “One Man, Two Guvnors” in 2012, is in negotiations to star in a Broadway revival of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” next spring, a spokesman for the revival’s producers confirmed on Thursday.

I’ve been sitting on this news for months - so excited that it’s moving forward.

Justin Barnette sings “I’m Calm” from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in Three Wishes for Sondheimas at 54 Below.

We are currently observing the advent period of Perpetual Anticipation which culminates with Sondheimas, the birthday of Stephen Sondheim. Today is the twenty-third day of Perpetual Anticipation.

If you’re not obsessed with Side by Side by Sondheim, you’re probably doing Sondheim fandom wrong.

This video features Larry Kert, Georgia Brown, and Nancy Dussault doing that revue’s opening medley of “Love Is In The Air” and “Comedy Tonight,” both from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To The Forum.

Most Sondheim fans know the famous story of Forum's out of town tryout, in which the show just wasn't getting laughs until the original opening number, “Love Is In The Air,” was replaced by “Comedy Tonight,” which better set the tone (and featured show-stoppingly hilarious staging by Jerome Robbins).

We aren’t doing either of these songs in Three Wishes for Sondheimas, although we do have both a number from Forum and a show’s discarded former opening number, both of which, it turns out, will be performed by Justin Barnette. But you’ll have to come to the show on Saturday night to find out what those songs are.

And while we’re on the subject of Mary Testa, here’s a concert rendition of “That Dirty Old Man,” which she performed in the last Broadway revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum.

Geoffrey Rush and company perform “Comedy Tonight” from the recent Australian production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Congratulations to Geoffrey Rush, winner of the 2013 Helpmann Award for Best Actor in a musical for his performance as Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in Australia.

Nancy Walker,
Forum - 1971 in Los Angeles

We were discussing this song today on Facebook, and I discovered the previous audio I had uploaded to Tumblr has disappeared, so here we go, one of Sondheim’s rarest songs to actually have been performed on Broadway, “Farewell,” added for Nancy Walker to sing in the 1971 Los Angeles production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

When the production moved to Broadway, Walker departed but the song remained. But the song hasn’t remained in subsequent productions, and because this revival was not commercially recorded, the song has been mostly forgotten. There’s only one official recording of the song, from a Bay Area Sondheim tribute from a few years ago.
