30 Days of Musical Theater Songs
18. A musical theater song from the musical with the best lyrics.
Sondheim’s lyrics and Weidman’s libretto in Pacific Overtures just makes the whole show a poem. I truly believe that these lyrics, combined with the pentatonic scale that slowly evolves into the octatonic scale of the Western tradition, plus the genius staging and scenic/costume design, make for one of the best shows overall in Sondheim’s repertoire. I know that those are high words, but I mean what I say. I’m not at all surprised that Sondheim usually selects “Someone in a Tree” from Pacific Overtures as his favorite song of his own composition.
I’ve made a lot of posts raving about this show, but I’ve never had a chance to post “Poems,” so here it is. While I’m not an expert, I believe the verses of this song are written in a variation of haiku form.
I’ve been meaning to post a recording of “Poems” as well, so here we go. [From the Original Broadway Cast Album.]
