I think this is my favorite of Sondheim’s love songs. It’s open-hearted without getting treacly. It’s got Sondheim’s signature creeping darkness, embodied by the word “enough.” Neither lover is really sure or each other, but sure enough. There’s also something really important about acknowledging a love that ran its course and ended more or less naturally: “None of it was wasted. / All of it will last.”
I also love the counter-melody that comes in at the end, with the words “There’s more of love in me right now / than all the little bits of love / I’ve known before.” Which of course isn’t included in this rendition, but what can you do?
