The universe has been telling me to look at this show for months—and who am I to argue? I love the interplay between the somewhat atypical music for the ensemble/happy couples and the way it dissolves into a classic Rogers ooom-chick melody as Leona sings her charming duet for one. The recording, just to be nice I suppose, adds to the end of the number an extra round of ensemble “la la la’s” not indicated in the score i found on the internet. Again, who am I to argue? Though I do wish the powers that be had included this final verse for the lonely Leona once she gets home (hipstified with a new iPhone app I’m playing with):
Why is there not more Elizabeth Allen in the world? And though I don’t think I really need see a full production of this (even in an Encores! setting—I hope to never ever have to sit through a staging of “What Do We Do? We Fly!”), I think it’s pretty obvious that Victoria Clark would be a smashing Leona (having played essentially the same part in Piazza).
The final verse was recorded on the Pasadena Playhouse cast recording.
